Waggerl Museum in Wagrain
Where author Karl Heinrich Waggerl lived and worked
K.H. Waggerl is one of Austria’s most important authors. Waggerl wrote his literary works in Wagrain, while his former home is now a museum.
In 1920, Karl Heinrich Waggerl accepted a teaching position in Wagrain. But with a chronic lung ailment ending his teaching career, Wagrain dedicated himself to writing. At first he authored novels, later turning to shorter prose forms. K. H. Waggerl lived until his death in 1973 right here in Wagrain and the SalzburgerLand. His home has since been turned into a museum.

The "Blaues Fenster" cultural society, in collaboration with the Village of Wagrain, has managed to create a fascinating exhibition. Located at the Waggerl House and including both audio and video stations, it documents Wagggerl’s life and works. The Waggerl Museum also houses complete display rooms, which have been preserved in their original condition.

Karl Heinrich Waggerl’s works captivate with the simplicity of their narrative, their kind sense of humour and a very deep-seated thoughtfulness. The immediate goings-on in the village of Wagrain can be readily made out in his novels and stories. And as to the extent of the socio-political importance of Waggerl’s works, both past and present, ample evidence is presented by the Waggerl Museum.
